Yesterday the Bank of Canada held its policy rate at 2.25% — the seventh consecutive hold — and warned that tariffs and oil prices could still push inflation above 3%. Here is what that actually means at your kitchen table, in plain English.

If you are on a variable rate: nothing changes.

Your payment stays exactly where it was. Seven straight holds also tells you something about the road ahead: the Bank is not in a hurry to move in either direction, and it just told the country the next surprise could be up, not down.

If you are renewing: this is your green light to shop.

Here is what most people miss — fixed mortgage rates do not follow the Bank of Canada announcement. They follow the bond market, which moves every day on its own. What a hold DOES give you is stability: the quotes you gather this week should still be standing next week, which makes this a good moment to shop properly instead of panic-signing.

And your window is bigger than you think. Rates can be held up to 120 days with many lenders, and you can start the process six months out. The renewal letter your bank mails is an opening bid — I make 30+ lenders compete with it. Your bank is welcome to win. They should just have to earn it.

Not sure when your window opens? Type your renewal date into my free Renewal Countdown and it maps your whole timeline.

If you are carrying expensive debt: stability cuts both ways.

The hold means your credit card rate is not falling either. If you are paying 20%+ on cards or a line of credit while sitting on home equity, rolling that debt into the mortgage — an equity take-out — works in any rate environment. And if your renewal is coming, it is the one moment you can do it with zero penalty. Two problems, one phone call.

If you are waiting to buy "until rates drop":

Seven consecutive holds is the Bank of Canada telling you, politely, not to hold your breath. Waiting has a price too — it is called competing with everyone else in the spring market. Worth running the math both ways before you decide.
