What Lenders Actually Do With Your Score

Your credit score isn't the whole picture — but it's the first filter. Here's what lenders are actually looking at beyond the number:

Payment history — Have you paid your bills on time? Late payments, collections, and consumer proposals hit hardest.

Credit utilisation — How much of your available credit are you using? Under 35% is ideal. Maxed-out cards are a red flag even with a decent score.

Credit history length — Longer is better. Lenders like seeing years of responsible borrowing, not brand-new accounts.

Credit mix — A combination of revolving credit (credit cards) and instalment loans (car payments) shows you can manage different types of debt.
